85 TETSUO’S GONE

“Tetsuo’s gone,” Kaneda tells her. “The others, too. And Akira.” Kay speaks hesitantly. “Kaneda, a little while ago—” Kai arrives, and his joyous shouting cuts her off. “Kaneda! You’re alive!” Kai cries, hugging his friend. “I thought—I thought you were gone, too. What about Tetsuo? Is he dead?” “I don’t know. He—” Kaneda stops, alarmed at a shaft of light which suddenly strikes them. But this time, it’s only the sunlight through the dispersing clouds.
